Ceramics

In the Fall of 1996, I began heading down a new career pathway, working in clay. This medium of expression has provided enormous satisfaction for me. I have studied at the DeCordova Museum Ceramics School, the Worcester Arts and Crafts Center, and the Harvard Ceramics Program. I was especially inspired by master potter Makoto Yabe, an instructor at DeCordova and at the Harvard program.

I started out doing most of my work in my own studio at my home. The studio overlooked the Assabet River in Concord, Massachusetts. Thus my website is: www.assabetpottery.com. I have since moved but have kept the name. I work in ceramics, using porcelain, stoneware, and earthenware. I use several techniques for firing the clay: reduction (gas kiln), electric kiln, raku, and saggar firing.

My works have been exhibited and sold through local galleries and craft shops, including Handworks, in Acton, Massachusetts, and Perceptions in Concord, Massachusetts, and now Six Bridges Gallery in Maynard. My ceramics have been in juried shows at the Concord Art Association and the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, including three years in “State of Clay” exhibitions. I have been part of two exhibits at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts. And I have taken part in Open Studios in Lexington several years in the recent past. One of my pieces was selected to be in 500 Raku, published by Lark Ceramics.

An exciting endeavor since I began working in clay has been my collaboration with Jane Dahmen, an accomplished artist. Her enthusiasm for using clay as a canvas, and our shared interest in exploring surface decorations, glazes, underglazes and other colorants, has yielded intriguing and exciting results. Our pieces have been shown at the Firehouse Gallery in Damariscotta, Maine, the McGowan Gallery in Concord, New Hampshire, the Powers Gallery in Acton, Massachusetts, and the Emerson Umbrella in Concord, Massachusetts.
